Who doesn't like a train?
4 Great Heritage Railways near Mazzard Farm (+ a bonus)
We know that many people staying at Mazzard Farm will go and enjoy at least one of the brilliant heritage railway journeys you can find near us. And no, it's not just 'little boys' who enjoy a steam train! So check these out!
Seaton Tramway
Seaton Tramway is a heritage railway with a difference. The trams are narrow gauge and follow the old British Railway route between Seaton and Colyton, which used to be part of the branch line between Seaton and ‘Seaton Junction’ at the London – Exeter mainline. Most trams are double decker with the open top deck offering beautiful views across the Seaton Wetlands. Keep eye on their website for some great winter specials too, such as 'Polar Express'.
The South Devon Railway
Running between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, this railway follows the river Dart, allowing for some great photographic opportunities. This is also why the South Devon Railway is such a firm favourite with TV and film production companies. If you've even just watched one Agatha Christie production, you've probably seen this railway in action!
Paignton - Dartmouth Steam Railway
Connecting Paignton on the mainline railway with Dartmouth, this heritage line follows a stunning route, which includes a halt at Greenway, the former home of Agatha Christie. An ideal trip out in combination with the regular train from Exeter to Paignton, following the famous Dawlish Loop. Or a few hours in beautiful Dartmouth.
West Somerset Railway
The West Somerset Railway connects Minehead with Bishops Lydeard. In fact, it is connected to the mainline at Taunton, but heritage trains do not alight there. Designed by Brunel, there has been a railway here for almost 175 year. Great railway journey to combine with a day out on Exmoor.
Pecorama
Pecorama, at just 20 minutes from Mazzard Farm in the stunning fishing village of Beer, is not a heritage railway as such, but since it is part of the model railway factory PECO, does offer all things trains. Model railways YOU can control, as well as a lovely miniature train you can travel on and which offers the most stunning views. Great gardens and play facilities too!
